The student has shown steady improvement across the terms, in English. Homework completion is consistent with a few late submissions. Overall, excellent progress!
In Term 1, students explore the concept of identity through personal and imaginative texts. They read stories that focus on character development and cultural experience, reflecting on how writers represent perspective and individuality. They write their own narratives, drawing on literary techniques such as characterisation, setting, and dialogue. This term also establishes core skills in grammar, sentence structure, and paragraphing.
The second term introduces persuasive language through the study of advertising, opinion pieces, and speeches. Students analyse how authors use rhetorical techniques and language choices to influence audience beliefs. They practise constructing arguments, writing persuasive texts, and delivering oral presentations with clarity and confidence. The term includes a focus on sentence fluency, vocabulary, and structuring arguments effectively.
Term 3 is focused on poetic and visual texts. Students read and interpret a range of poems, identifying language features such as metaphor, rhyme, and rhythm. They experiment with their own poetic writing, using imagery and sound devices to convey mood and meaning. Alongside poetry, students study visual texts such as film or picture books, analysing how visual elements contribute to storytelling and audience impact.
In the final term, students are introduced to dramatic texts, including plays and scripted scenes. They explore how dialogue, stage directions, and performance shape meaning. Students participate in reading and staging scenes, developing oral fluency and interpretive skills. They also complete reflective and response writing tasks, considering how texts have influenced their thinking. This term consolidates learning and strengthens their ability to express ideas both creatively and critically.
