The Year 6 English program prepares students for the transition to high school by consolidating advanced reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students engage with a range of increasingly complex texts, including fiction, non-fiction, media, and poetry. They analyse how language features, structure, and vocabulary shape meaning across text types. A strong emphasis is placed on purposeful writing, grammar and editing, comprehension strategies, and oral communication. Students are encouraged to develop independence in their learning, write with clarity and voice, and critically reflect on texts. The program supports both creative and analytical thinking and nurtures a love of literature, while ensuring readiness for Year 7.

The student has shown steady improvement across the terms, in English. Homework completion is consistent with a few late submissions. Overall, excellent progress!
The first term focuses on developing imaginative and personal writing. Students read a variety of narrative texts and reflect on how authors use plot structure, setting, and characterisation to engage the reader. They use these insights to create their own well-structured and descriptive narratives, with an emphasis on refining paragraphs, enhancing vocabulary, and using dialogue effectively. Personal recounts and reflective writing are also practised to help students articulate their experiences with fluency and structure.
In Term 2, students explore persuasive writing and learn how to construct arguments using emotive language, evidence, and persuasive devices. They examine speeches, advertisements, and opinion pieces, analysing how media influences audience perspective. Students compose written arguments that express clear opinions and support them with logical reasoning. Oral language skills are developed through debates, presentations, and discussions.
The third term shifts the focus to factual texts. Students engage with information reports, explanations, and procedures, learning how to organise facts clearly and coherently. Research and note-taking skills are strengthened as students complete projects based on topics of interest. They work on synthesising information from multiple sources and presenting it using formal language and structure. Editing and revising for accuracy and cohesion are emphasised.
In the final term, students study various forms of poetry and explore how poetic devices such as imagery, rhythm, and alliteration convey meaning and emotion. They write their own poems and participate in performances to develop expression and confidence. As students prepare for high school, transition-focused writing tasks help consolidate their ability to write for different purposes. This includes reflective pieces, goal-setting, and self-assessment, encouraging them to take ownership of their learning and communication skills.
