The Year 5 English curriculum strengthens studentsÆ ability to read, interpret, and compose increasingly complex texts across a range of genres. It places a strong focus on developing writing craft, encouraging students to write with greater control of language, structure, and purpose. Students explore the features of persuasive, imaginative, and informative texts, while enhancing their comprehension skills through engagement with high-quality literature and factual texts. Vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation, and spelling are taught in context to support clear and effective communication. Oral language and active listening are also embedded across all terms.

The student has shown steady improvement across the terms, in English. Homework completion is consistent with a few late submissions. Overall, excellent progress!
In Term 1, students focus on imaginative texts, examining how authors use setting, character, and plot to engage readers. Through reading and discussion, they learn how language choices influence mood and meaning. They apply this understanding by crafting their own narratives, experimenting with structure, description, and dialogue to enhance their stories.
This term introduces students to persuasive texts, including advertisements, speeches, and opinion pieces. They analyse how writers use language to argue a point of view, considering tone, modality, and rhetorical devices. Students plan and write persuasive texts that clearly present opinions supported by logical reasoning and evidence.
Students focus on informative writing by engaging with factual texts and organising information clearly and logically. They read and write reports, explanations, and procedural texts, learning how to structure ideas into cohesive paragraphs using formal and topic-specific language. This term supports research, note-taking, and summarising skills.
The final term explores poetry and spoken word, developing students' appreciation for rhythm, sound, imagery, and performance. They read a variety of poems, identify poetic techniques, and create their own verses. Reading fluency and oral presentation are emphasised as students learn to use expression, volume, and pacing in performance.
