Sample Syllabus for Year 11 English Advanced

  1. Term 1 - Common Module: Reading to WriteLatest

In the opening term, students are immersed in a wide variety of texts including short fiction, essays, poetry, and speeches. The focus is on reading as writersùanalysing how skilled authors use structure, syntax, imagery, and tone to shape meaning and move audiences. Students respond through a series of crafted written pieces that blend analysis with original composition. Experimentation is encouraged, helping students refine their style and build confidence in their written expression.

  2. Term 2 - Module A: Narratives that Shape Our WorldLatest

This term centres on the power of storytelling and how narratives are used to represent, challenge, and reinforce cultural and personal values. Students explore how texts shape social and historical perspectives through narrative form, characterisation, and voice. They engage with a major extended text alongside supporting texts, analysing how storytelling is constructed and how they can employ similar techniques in their own writing.

  3. Term 3 - Module B: Critical Study of LiteratureLatest

In the third term, students undertake a focused study of a substantial literary text, examining how its form, language, and thematic depth contribute to its lasting value. They evaluate the textÆs meaning, purpose, and impact, considering both contextual influence and textual integrity. This module fosters independent literary thinking and supports students in articulating clear, evidence-based interpretations through sustained analytical writing.

  4. Term 4 - Writing Portfolio and Assessment PreparationLatest

The final term is dedicated to consolidating student learning and refining their writing across all formsùimaginative, persuasive, and analytical. Students compile a portfolio of work that demonstrates growth, experimentation, and craft. This term also includes revision of key texts and concepts in preparation for final assessments, with an emphasis on producing polished, confident writing under timed conditions.
