Year 9 Math

The Year 9 Mathematics course introduces more abstract and multi-step problem solving across number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, and probability. Students refine their mathematical reasoning and begin to specialise into Stage 5.2 or 5.3 pathways, depending on their progress and ability. There is a strong emphasis on applying mathematical techniques to complex, real-world scenarios.

Sample Syllabus for Year 9 Math

  1. Term 1 - Algebra and IndicesLatest

Term 1 deepens understanding of algebraic techniques, including expansion and factorisation of binomials and manipulation of algebraic fractions. Students also consolidate their knowledge of indices, including negative and fractional indices, and apply index laws to simplify expressions. These algebraic skills form the foundation for work with equations and functions in later terms.

  2. Term 2 - Linear and Non-Linear RelationshipsLatest

Term 2 explores both linear and non-linear equations and their graphs. Students solve multi-step equations, work with inequalities, and understand the features of linear functions. They are introduced to non-linear relationships such as quadratics, learning how to expand and factorise quadratics and sketch their graphs. This term links symbolic, graphical, and numerical representations of relationships.

  3. Term 3 - Geometry, Trigonometry and MeasurementLatest

In Term 3, students study geometric reasoning, including proofs involving angles, congruent triangles, and the properties of shapes. They also extend their understanding of measurement through surface area and volume of complex solids. Basic trigonometry is introduced for solving problems involving right-angled triangles, including finding unknown sides and angles.

  4. Term 4 - Probability, Statistics and Exam PreparationLatest

Term 4 focuses on probability, including two-step chance experiments, and introduces students to tree diagrams and tables for probability calculations. In statistics, students interpret and compare data sets using measures of spread and central tendency. The term also includes structured revision and problem-solving practice to consolidate all major topics and prepare students for the demands of Stage 5.3 or senior mathematics.
