Sample Syllabus for Year 12 English Advanced

  1. Term 1 - Common Module: Texts and Human ExperiencesLatest

In the first term, students study the Common Module, which explores how texts represent human qualities and emotions associated with personal, social, and cultural experiences. They examine a prescribed text in depth, identifying how language is used to invite reflection on the human condition. Analytical and imaginative responses are developed, and students begin crafting personal interpretations supported by textual evidence.

  2. Term 2 - Module A: Textual ConversationsLatest

This term focuses on comparative study. Students explore the resonance and dissonance between two paired texts from different contexts. They analyse how composers engage in dialogue across time, reimagining and reshaping meaning through language, form, and perspective. Close textual analysis supports the comparison, highlighting the influence of context on values and representation.

  3. Term 3 - Module B: Critical Study of LiteratureLatest

In Term 3, students undertake a detailed critical study of a single prescribed text, evaluating its textual integrity and significance. They develop independent judgments about the textÆs language, ideas, and literary merit. Emphasis is placed on crafting coherent and insightful critical responses, underpinned by detailed analysis and personal interpretation.

  4. Term 4 - Module C: The Craft of Writing and Exam PreparationLatest

The final term consolidates skills across all modules, with a focus on refining written expression. Students reflect on the writing process to compose imaginative, discursive, persuasive, and analytical texts. They revise previous modules, complete practice tasks, and strengthen their ability to write with precision, insight, and purpose under exam conditions.
